What is SmokeFreeUP?
SmokeFreeUP is dedicated to providing Yoopers and tourists with smoke-free park options throughout the UP. Over the course of three years, we will collect information on parks that are already smoke-free. We will also be working to help interested parks become smoke-free.
Why Smoke Free?
- Cigarette smoke remains the largest cause of preventable death in the United States.
- It is projected that if there is no decrease in smoking, 5.6 million Americans age 17 and younger are projected to die early (on average, over a decade earlier) from smoking-related diseases.
- Smoking doesn't just affect the smoker; stroke and even death can be caused by secondhand smoke exposure.
- 75% of smokers have reported that they litter cigarettes. Over 1/3 of all collected litter is from cigarette butts.
